The fund raiser is back on!

For those who didn’t hear, Uncle Hugo’s Bookstore, which has been serving Minneapolis since 1974 was totally destroyed by arson a couple nights ago. Don Blyly is the owner, a Minneapolis local, and all around nice guy.

Alexi Vandenburg launched a Gofundme the next morning (which I donated to and promoted) but then he put it on hold at Don’s request as he worked some things out and figured out how to proceed. The fund raiser has been turned over to Don’s son Sam to run (I don’t think Don does much of anything involving computers) and is now live again.

On a personal level, Uncle Hugo’s is how I got my start as a writer. Don Blyly read my first self-published book, and told Toni Weisskopf that it would be a perfect fit for Baen. I’ve signed books at Uncle Hugo’s I believe almost every book tour I’ve done, every year. There was always a wonderful crowd of locals and people who drove in from all over the region. Even during a blizzard people still turned out.

Losing Uncle Hugo’s sucks, but a lot of readers, fans, and people in the publishing business know Don and will want to help him rebuild. So please share that link. Thanks.

GoFundMe for Uncle Hugo’s Bookstore, destroyed by rioters last night

The GoFundMe for Uncle Hugos is now live. Please, share this far and wide.

For those of you that don’t know, Uncle Hugo’s is a locally owned, indy bookstore in Minneapolis. It got burned down last night by rioters. The building it a total loss. All the inventory was destroyed.

Uncle Hugo’s has been there since 1974. It was a special place, beloved by the locals. Because it specialized in used books, a bunch of irreplaceable 1st editions and signed copies by authors who are no longer with us were lost.

Don Blyly is the owner. On a personal level, he’s the bookstore owner who got a copy of my first manuscript, who then passed it on to Toni Weisskopf at Baen, telling her that it was a perfect fit for Baen, and that he could sell this book, except the dummy who wrote it was self publishing. I’ve been to Uncle Hugo’s to sign books probably eight or nine times now. Basically, Don helped launch my career, and I’m not alone.

Don is trying to figure out how to proceed, with a new location, or with a scaled down operation.

Perspective

Yep. The people wanting people to go back to work? They just love money more than life. They just want to get hair cuts and eat hamburgers. They want to kill grandma so the stock market will go up. It certainly can’t be a risk/cost analysis. Nope. They just hate science. Even the scientists among them hate science.

But don’t worry, if millions of poor people starve in the third world now, the same smug fucks who’ve been yelling at us to shut down everything for the last couple of months will take zero blame for that. I’m willing to bet that when/if this happens, they’ll still be out there, signalling their virtue from their comfy homes, because They Care So Hard.

Check out the article below from the ultra right wing New York Times, quoting the ultra right wing UN, so you can just proclaim it is biased conspiracy theory and can be safely dismissed. Now share some more memes about how everybody who disagrees with you is too stupid to wash their hands. That never gets old.

My only hope is that the UN’s math is as wrong for this as it is for everything else, but even if they’re off by an order of magnitude, the cure would still be worse than the disease. This is potentially a perfect storm of a lot of really poor people getting hit really hard. Food production down. Food costs up. Their exports down. No tourism. Less income. Which means more deaths from all the regular diseases, and of course, the resulting unrest. One big nasty spiral.

But that’s okay. You guys with the spicy memes, and your work from home jobs, and savings in the bank, just keep on pretending that everything is simple. Right/wrong, good/evil, black/white, your shit don’t stink, and anybody who disagrees with your hot take, well it can only be because they’re a fool. That guy who lost his job, business, and is worried about losing his house, or how he’s gonna feed his kids? He’s dumb. You’re the real champion.

Because you listen to the experts. Just not *those* experts. You listen to the *right* experts. The ones who agree with what you are already doing.

In reality, deep down, you probably know that everything is complicated. And it’s calculating risk vs. cost. There’s no easy answer. No matter what you do, somebody gets hurt. Actions have consequences. There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch. But that’s scary to admit, and it means that you aren’t that virtuous after all, and you certainly aren’t any better than those you’ve been smugly mocking because their risk/cost analysis came back with different results than yours.

Because that would mean that they’re just people, just like you.

Nope. Can’t have that. This is the internet, where we say fuck your nuance.

I started an Instagram page.

You guys know I have a love/hate relationship with social media. I interact with my fans way more than most authors, but the main place I’ve done that is Facebook. Problem is there, I’m on the naughty list so get banned for literally anything, and even when I am there, I’m throttled so only a fraction of the people who follow me see my posts. Plus, I hit the 5,000 person friends cap years ago.

My kids have been telling me to get on Instagram. Nobody their generation is on Facebook. They just mock it and call it a “boomer page”. I like selling books to people of all ages, so why not? 🙂

And yes, I know that they are owned by the same people. Only they don’t share their Naughty List… yet. MeWe, sadly, the only time I’ve seen it have traffic is when I brought my own traffic with me, which kind of defeats the purpose.

I’m not leaving Facebook (where else would I get to hear the big brain hot-takes of ridiculous moronic internet randos?) but I think I’m going to try and use Instagram for regular updates and behind the scenes stuff. Of course, this blog will be where all the big things go.

All of them are narrated by Adam Baldwin, who is friggin’ hilarious.
