Thank you for this. I’ve been out in the Wiki-weeds doing ‘research’ for book 2 for several weeks when what I need to do is sit down and start writing.
I’m finding that the biggest research trap in doing alt-history is trying to figure out how to handle the real people who were around in the time period, because somebody is sure to ask “What’s so-and-so doing in your timeline?” I just need to put that aside until it actually becomes an issue in the plot.

You guys were riffing on David again wrt his worldbuilding. And yeah, we love him. Which is why “How David Weber orders a Pizza” is still one of the funniest things I have ever found on the internet.

I disagree with Larry’s claim a bad author has characters knowing architecture or food depending on what the author knows about. Bad authors who know almost nothing about food ALSO love to write about food.
