This week’s episode is brought to you by Dave (D.J.) Butler’s Abbott in Darkness (available now on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3kXsr1x )

John Abbott is all in.

He’s up to his eyeballs in debt to pay for school, and he’s just moved his small family forty light-years from Earth for a plum job with the wealthy interstellar corporation, The Sarovar Company. John’s first assignment is to discreetly investigate possible corruption at the remote Arrowhawk Station, where Company traders buy the famous Sarovari Weave from the three-sided, crablike Weavers.

John finds evidence of theft and worse, but when the guilty parties realize he’s getting close, they come after him and his family. Can John catch the thieves and end their corrupt trade? Can he head off a war between the Company and the Weavers? Can he make a life for his family in this remote wilderness without corrupting himself?

With no way back to Earth, the only direction for John Abbott and his family to go is forward—into danger.

  1. I’ve really enjoyed this interview with Dave Butler. He’s got a lot of solid observations and advice. Good stuff. Thanks for bringing him on the show.

  2. Thank you for this. I’ve been out in the Wiki-weeds doing ‘research’ for book 2 for several weeks when what I need to do is sit down and start writing.

I’m finding that the biggest research trap in doing alt-history is trying to figure out how to handle the real people who were around in the time period, because somebody is sure to ask “What’s so-and-so doing in your timeline?” I just need to put that aside until it actually becomes an issue in the plot.

  3. You mentioned that these podcast episodes are sponsored. I have a hobby project/software visualization thingy that I might like to advertise. Science fiction fans would probably find it interesting.

What is involved in sponsoring an episode? (Still trying to decide if I’ll ever make enough money on this thing to justify it though.)

  4. You guys were riffing on David again wrt his worldbuilding. And yeah, we love him. Which is why “How David Weber orders a Pizza” is still one of the funniest things I have ever found on the internet.

  5. I disagree with Larry’s claim a bad author has characters knowing architecture or food depending on what the author knows about. Bad authors who know almost nothing about food ALSO love to write about food.
