Even though I’ve read Thistle once, but with the audio performance, I guess the plot twist right off. Sometimes, having a audiobook performer that’s consistent voice can be a bad thing.
It is all things to all men!
Nice! Bought a copy.
Can I read this if I haven’t read any of the other MHI books first?
Sure, but you’d probably be confused by some of the stories.
I wouldn’t. They are good stories unless you don’t know what’s going on in the actual story.
That’s awesome. For some reason I thought it was coming out in 2 weeks. Great suprise for the morning. Picked up the Kindle and Audible edition, can’t wait to get started.
I clearly should have looked up the list of entries before now. I knew about Jim and John R. and Jody Lynn, and Quincy and Faith from the panel at Dragon Con, but Ludlum/Le Carre/Forsyth by way of John C. Wright?! Holy schnikies.
Amazon just told me that they shipped my preordered copy. I’m a happy boy (hubba hubba hubba hubba hubba). Can’t wait to see what the likes of Jim Butcher and John C Wright do with all the potential that the MHI universe has to offer.
Looking forward to reading it. Amazon promises me that it was delivered to the house 10 minutes ago!
I’m 3 stories into it so far. Larry, I’ve got a question for you. Would you be able to incorporate a character or two from a MH Files story written by another author into future MHI novels? If so, I’d like to suggest that Justinian and his team get at least a mention or a cameo in a future novel. They’re just too neat to not hear from again! It would be suboptimal not to get some kind of update on how they’re settling in…..
I’m pretty sure that the rights to the characters are allowed to be used in the main story. Won’t mind seeing Schaeffer brothers in the main story.
I hope so! I’m now 4 stories into the book and really enjoying it.
Not to incite fevered competition or anything, but 6 stories in and I have Butcher by a nose
I vote for the twins, the new Enchanted Forest knight, the spider-man, and the janitor. Because now that you have a Jim Butcher character, how can you not use him again?
I’m not quite done with the book, but I’m enjoying more of the stories by the unknowns than the ones by the big names, which is actually kinda neat.
I’m with Shawna. The twins, Galadriel, and Justinian’s crew have to be cannon.
I imagine that Milo would have a blast building weapons for Justinian and his troops. Actually, I have a hint for him: 4mm Flobert. It’s big in Eastern Europe, I bet the Czech hunters would be willing to send him a case.
He and his team could be very useful at stealthily infiltrating an enemy lair to get information or possibly plant a few bottles of holy water in strategic places!
Yes. I can use those characters in future stories.
Excellent! Glad to hear you’ve got the option. Take care.
Also glad to hear it, although I want to read the reaction of a certain large MCB agent when he meets…hmmm…technically his sister, rather than his…ah, spoilers.
I saw that a new MHI book was coming to my library, so I picked up the first in the series. LOVED IT! As an aspiring author, I usually end up ‘editing’ books as I read them. Monster Hunter International was so delightful, my inner editor simply sat back and enjoyed. Thanks! Since I live in Utah, I love seeing someone from my state succeed. It’s a brutal business. Keep it up! I’m looking forward to picking up the rest of the series.
4 AM book. Start the first page, and put it down finished at 4 AM.
FYI, saw the sale from my eReaderIQ alerts before I saw the blog post here.
Got mine. Love me some pre-order!
Book ordered. And speaking of completely unrelated topics, Larry, there’s a tank driving range just down the road from us in Uvalde. Wish I’d known about it before the San Antonio signing, but next time you’re down this way, maybe we can set up an armored rampage or two!
Despite my boycott of Tor and side-lining any non-Baen trad pub, between you, Castalia House and the Mad Genii, I have more good adult SF to read than I have time for again.
Already purchased the eARC back-when.
I’m sure this has been asked a lot, so what’s one more (anybody): is there more money to be made by the author with that larger purchase?
Yes, but buy them however it makes you happy.
Oh boy oh boy oh boy, just in time for my birthday! Can’t wait.
And listen, Larry, I want to apologize for my unkind words after reading Siege. I was still reeling from the coitis interruptus of the cliff-hanger ending. I tried to make a post to that effect on that thread, but it had already been closed for comments.
Heh. The Orange one in the Ringo story. Loved it.
Got mine the release day and it’s been amazing. Not quite finished yet, but a great tour of the odd corners of the world where strange things happen. So very recommended whether a new fan or an old one!
I bought it on reserve when it was first announced. I am so looking forward to it! The book arrived yesterday from Amazon. I think it was very fitting that when I opened the box a huge spider had nested in the alcove formed by the two covers, the pages and the box side. I was “startled” you might say. But I had to laugh as well as I crushed it!
How did you solicit the stories? There is not any overlap of the story lines aside from reoccurring characters and they cover a wide spectrum of story line threads. Did you have a list of topics/themes and authors picked what interested them or did you assign topics/themes?
It was invite only. We picked authors we knew and contacted them directly. They sent us pitches, which I then approved, modified, or denied.
Just a question that’s occurred to me – Is there a clause in Franks’ contract with Franklin for the Continental rebellion failing?
Ok I just want to say I love most of your books I read them for bad ass MFers with saiga 12 raining hell down on evil but elves and gnomes being caught with boxes I don’t understand and only 1 Franks story is no good We the fans want a franks book line >Now that Ra is not writing Drizzt books you need to pick up the pace I did love the last book siege but this one is a schizophrenic night mare why no unicorns shooting rainbows If some of these stories where just to dam soft
Listened to half of it and have really enjoyed it. Even the weakest story was very enjoyable by the end.
I loved the mummy in The Manticore Sanction, BTW.
I couldn’t find another place to write this where it just may get Mr. Correia’s attention.
I Pre-Ordered MHI Alpha Signed Leatherbound edition many months ago, and my deliver was cancelled recently. If you do not have enough books to go around, please just cancel the pre-order instead of pushing back my delivery date 5 times and keeping my hopes up. I am beyond disappointed, with no way to even get any sort of leatherbound without paying $200 from a 3rd party.
Just disappointed, that’s all
Dude, how much control do you think I have over the Amazon, the giant global megacorporation? Seriously? I get you are pissed, but ask yourself, does this devoutly capitalist author, who loves selling books and making fans happy, WANT Amazon to NOT order enough books? Keep in mind that the more books Amazon orders beforehand, the more I get paid.
You think you are disappointed? For every person who gets their preorder cancelled, that’s like $4 I DO NOT GET. Multiply you by the thousand or so people Amazon under ordered, and my royalty is out like four grand. Due to the popularity of all of these, I could have personally probably made an additional $12-$15,000 off of leatherbounds so far. So yes, I feel your disappointment, probably a whole lot more than you realize. 😀
Leather bound limited special editions are smaller print runs. That’s why they are limited. They only print so many (I know, I signed every single one of them). When Amazon screws up and under orders, because they’ve got some corpo-humanoid inputting an algorithm about predicted preorder cancellation rates, they don’t give a shit what the author thinks about how much inventory they should carry. They don’t even talk to me. I mean quite literally nothing to them.
I would love for them to just cancel people’s orders rather than bumping them back, because then you could go buy it somewhere else before they run out. That would be awesome. But again, Amazon doesn’t give a flying crap what I think about their business practices. Authors aren’t special to Amazon. We are just product producers. Imagine they are Walmart, and I am a factory that makes widgets in North Dakota. Hell, I’m not even the factory, that’s my publisher. I’m the lead widget engineer. How much do you think Walmart gives a shit about the opinions of one lead widget engineer from one small factory that provides one of their 15,000,000 SKUs? Probably not a whole lot.
So sorry. Wish I could help. But I’m getting hosed more than you are.
They were all great, but “Hitler’s Dog” was my favorite. Since the first book from “Franks” viewpoint, I have hungered for more. Also, I hadn’t read anything by Maberry. After finishing Monster Hunter Files, I immediately bought “Patient Zero”. It has been great. I’m looking forward to the next in the Ledger series.
Thank you for pulling this together, and would it be too much to ask if you could do another…soon…heh.
Do you have “Urban Allies”? There was a fantastic story by both authors teaming up in that book where Franks and Joe Ledger wind up working together to deal with a demon incursion in Iraq. Fantastic story! Both characters really got to shine. $2.99 for the Kindle version.
Thanks for the tip! I’m definitely going to look into picking that up. Happy Day!
I do love a good book,
Ok. You know you have too much good stuff to read when you discover you already own that exciting something somebody suggested you look into. I probably bought it because it was mentioned here, but I was in the middle of reading something else and forgot.
Excellent stories. Normally I expect only one or at best two good stories in an anthology but every story in this book is worth reading.
I’d like to see Thucydides again (Justinian not so much, in fact, not at all) – IMO Butcher created a character whose inner voice fits right in to the MHI world. I liked Galadriel but a little bit of that trailer park goes a long way, so one story is enough.
And thanks to John Wright who taught me that “whelmed” is a word that does not need an “over” in front of it. I’m gonna use it in conversation sometime soon.
I’m still reading it, but I have a question: Is Butcher’s story an intentional sequel to The Secret of Nimh? One of my favorite movies. Thanks.
Your story is fantastic. Butcher’s story is perfect. Mrs. George… who knew you could do If You Give A Mouse a Cookie with MHI?
Worth every penny.
Shush! You’ll spoil Larry and Jim’s new children’s book, *If You Give a Rat an X-Acto Knife*!
Are all these stories considered canon? I have a hard time making the MHI and Jane Yellowrock universes mesh in my brain. The monster lore is way too different between the two.
I think the best way to look at it is that it takes place in an alternate universe where the existence of monsters seems to be known to the general public, and where a version of MHI exists that is capable of calling in airstrikes on biker bars.
With that story I got that feeling you get when you start reading a book without realizing it’s from the middle of a series. It seemed to me to be all Jane Yellowrock, not really MHI at all despite containing people from a company of the same name. Don’t get me wrong, it was an exciting, well written story, but it seems to me that it was really one for existing fans of the character, not people like me who have never read any Faith Hunter.
Mostly through it and its just great!* The one thing I think the main MHI books are missing are the less world shatteriny stores. Please make more anthologies like these!
*My one gripe is Ringos story, I just cannot get to like Chad or Ringos charactet writing. Doesn’t take away from my overall enjoyment too much.
Apologies for the typos, phone typing while corraling a toddler causes issues some days.
