May Update Post

Still lots of stuff going on.

Writing Update

My next release is the last Monster Hunter Memoirs novel, Saints, with John Ringo. It ill be out June 3rd. The eARC is available now, the reviews are positive, and people really seem to be enjoying it.

Then in September, my short story collection Target Rich Environment comes out. I’ve been going on the page proofs for it today. I’m super proud of this one. I actually love writing short fiction, but since its been published all over the place, most of my regular fans haven’t read most of these.

This is a fun one for me because it’s all over the board, different styles, different genres, going for different vibes. Its got action, comedy, horror, a couple of sad parts, a little bit of everything. And its a fun way to show that I’m not a one trick pony.

It also contains a story I cowrote with my oldest daughter, and that is pretty neat.

House of Assassins is done but I don’t know the release date yet. I keep saying this, and doofuses keep giving Son of the Black Sword negative reviews because they think there wasn’t a sequel. It ain’t like I do an update post every month for kicks and giggles.

I’m currently working on Monster Hunter Guardian. First draft by Sarah is done. I’m 1/2 through it doing my tweaks and edits, but since I had to pause for a different project because of timing, I’ve sent that 1/2 back to Sarah for her to do her next editing pass, while I keep working on the 2nd half.

The other project is for an anthology that I can’t announce yet. I’m one of the two editors for it, and I need to get my story done for it. I’m just waiting for one last contract to come in from an author, and then I can announce what it is and who is in it. (fun subject, and it has got some great authors and really big names).  I’ve got the first five stories already turned in, and they’re great.

I got some good writing related news. Monster Hunter Siege was the #5 bestselling fantasy paperback in the country last week on Nielsen Bookscan.

Yard Moose Mountain

Property developers earn their money. Holy moly. My hobby for two years now has been getting permits, and permits for permits, and filling out forms to get a permit to apply for a different permit, and then paying large sums of money to various people, places, and things in order to satisfy other people, places, and things, so they’ll give me permits too.

In other words, construction on Yard Moose Mountain is proceeding. The primary excavation, trenching, power lines, roads, drainage, geothermal, and septic has been going on for the last few weeks., since it finally stopped snowing on us so we can actually move dirt.

And it is a LOT of dirt. We are bending the mountain to our will.  On the bright side, normally in a project like this that means they’d have to cart off tons and tons of dirt somewhere else, but since I’ve got space, all that dirt is just turning into berms and backstops. My pistol range will now be 50 yards wide and 70 yards deep with 12 foot berms.  All that material only made a dent in the whole.

And that doesn’t even get into the part where we have to bring in a thousand tons of gravel for the road.

People keep asking me how come the house isn’t done yet… I don’t think they realize the magnitude of this process. This isn’t just building a house on an empty lot where everything already exists. It’s taken me two years to create what’s basically an empty lot.

Further Examples of why in my Opinion, Mike Glyer is a Scumbag and File 770 is Evil.

If you are short on time, you can skip all the background stuff I wrote and read this link from John Ringo instead. It’s the important part.
https://www.facebook.com/notes/john-ringo/on-the-subject-of-slander/10155634795822055/

Now for background. Recently, bestselling author John Ringo was scheduled to be a guest at ConCarolinas, but had to drop out after his presence upset a social justice lynch mob.

Of course, nobody had any actual first hand reasons why Ringo made them “unsafe”. It was all the typical lies, temper tantrums, and bullshit. People who actually know John from cons either A. Have no problem with the guy. or B. at worst think he talks too much on panels (that’s what moderators are for).

But SJWs don’t need proof. They just need to declare something makes them feel unsafe, and thus is super bad, and has to go or else. They’ve got emotion and outrage. So they pitched a big bitch fest.  It was all the usual accusatory stuff, misogynistic, homophobic, racist etc. (and their examples? Nothing from real life, just a couple of his FICTIONAL characters bad behavior from among the thousands of fictional characters he’s written).

As S.M. Stirling said: “There is a technical term for someone who confuses the opinions of a character in a book with those of the author. That term is idiot.”

Ringo bailed out rather than put up with their dramatic nonsense. The ConCom handled the announcement in the worst way possible, trying to make the perpetually offended crowd happy (that never works). So they lost a big draw popular bestseller with 7 million books in print to try and appease about two dozen random assholes nobody has ever heard of.

Get Woke, Go Broke.

But that’s not what this post is about. It’s about the disgusting cesspit of File 770. Because whenever SJWs beclown themselves by making up crazy accusations, they can never admit they’re wrong, instead they double down. And true to form, they did the same thing reporting about Ringo.

This is my personal opinion on File 770, and it’s dishonest, disingenuous, scumbag operator, China Mike Glyer:  https://monsterhunternation.com/2017/06/13/a-monster-hunter-nation-opinion-piece-mike-glyer-is-a-scumbag/

Part of Glyer’s shtick is while he pretends to be an honest reporter, he lets his crackpot denizens lie their asses off, while deleting comments from people who disagree with his established narrative. So his horde of psychos gather together, make shit up, opposing views (or people who were actually there) get deleted, so that the insidious narrative can go forth, to fuck over that author for the rest of his career.  But don’t worry, he only does this to authors who don’t toe the right political line.

After the ConCarolina’s thing, the lies there were so egregious that John Ringo actually lawyered up, and his guy gave them a cease and desist warning.

You really need to read John’s link, because it is so perfectly demonstrative of the fundamental dishonesty of these people. In this particular case, they took something that in reality was actually really sweet, and twisted it into something obscene.

Oh yeah, and the gang of jackbooted thugs in that slander? It was two guys, Chris and Doc, the t-shirts were made that morning as a joke, they were wearing sneakers rather than jack boots, and the hair cut was required by the US Army.

I hope Ringo sues them. I’d love to see him go all Hulk Hogan on their Gawker ass.

Monster Hunter Siege, now available in paperback

Monster Hunter Siege is now available in mass market paperback.

GO BIG OR GO HOME

When Monster Hunter International’s top hunter, Owen Zastava Pitt, was given a tip about some hunters who had gone missing in action, he didn’t realize their rescue mission would snowball into the single biggest operation in MHI’s history. Their men are being held prisoner in a horrific nightmare dimension, and the only way to reach them is through the radioactive ruins of a monster-infested war zone.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, it’s also the home base of the powerful creature behind the devastating attacks on the Last Dragon and Copper Lake. It turns out ancient gods of chaos really hate trespassers. But this god picked a fight with the wrong crew, and now MHI wants payback. Calling on their allies, a massive expedition is formed, and with the odds stacked against them, a legion of hunters goes to war.

It’s D-Day at the City of Monsters.

eARC for Monster Hunter Memoirs: Saints AVAILABLE NOW!

The eARC for Monster Hunter Memoirs: Saints is available now:

http://www.baen.com/monster-hunter-memoirs-saints-earc.html

Saints is the last of the memoirs trilogy written by me and John Ringo.

For those of you who don’t know what an eARC is, it stands for Electronic Advanced Reader Copy. These are the early versions of the manuscript, not fully edited, which get sent out to the reviewers. Baen, being buffed capitalists, understand that fans will pay to get a book early so they make their eARCs available for sale to you guys. (How many people like eARCs? Let’s put it this way. I earned out my advance for Nemesis on eARC sales alone. Because capitalism makes you ripped!).

eARCs aren’t fully edited, so you even get to see all the typos we turn in. Some eARCs or more polished than others, and there are long running jokes about scenes like “insert explosions here”. But honestly, of all my books so far there has never been a major change between the eARC and the final. Other than copy editing, that’s pretty much it.

If you read the eARC, stop by the Monster Hunter International, Hunters Unite page on Facebook, where there is a spoiler filled discussion thread. From the reviews so far, people are loving this one.

The official release date for the actual book is July 3rd.
