Crimson Pact 5: the final Tombs & Santos story

The Crimson Pact is an anthology series edited by Paul Genesse. I’ve cowritten a series of short stories about a US Marine who can see the future, turned demon killing freelance exorcist, turned apocolyptic Catholic warrior, along with Steve Diamond (who is writing an FBI profiler who keeps coming back from the dead). There have been several Tombs and Santos stories, and Diego Santos is probably one of my favorite characters of all time.

This is the final story and wraps up the entire Crimson Pact series.

If you aren’t familiar with the others (you should snag them anyway, because they are cheap, and there are tons of good stories in there from a slew of authors) you just need to know that this is a battle against demons across a whole bunch of different realities. So you’ve got westerns, you’ve got sci-fi, you’ve got heroic fantasy, you’ve got straight up horror, you’ve got samurai drama, you’ve got whatever the hell it is that I write for a living, and more.

And since this volume wraps up the project, there is one finale story that wraps up everything, where all of the characters from the various realities and times are drawn together afer their deaths for one final apocolyptic battle. Pat Tracy wrote that one, and if you’ve read Pat’s WNGN fiction, you know the dude can write the hell out of stuff. This one is a sci-fi demon killing extravaganza (and I even gave him permission to have one of my well known MHI characters make a cameo apperance) 🙂

A new novel from me, Into the Storm

They just officially announced it. Coming soon: https://skullislandx.com/warmachine/into-the-storm

Here is the cover art by Mario Mazzoni.

Into the Storm (2)

A knight of Cygnar follows a strict moral code. His integrity is beyond reproach. He holds himself to the highest standards whether dealing with friend or foe. And he values honor above all.

The year is 606 AR, and Cygnar has been sorely pressed by its enemies both at home and abroad. In Caspia, the conflict with the Protectorate is about to erupt into full war with the looming invasion of Sul. The Cygnaran military is desperate for soldiers with the skill, strength, and bravery to take up the devastating galvanic weaponry of the new Storm Division. In this climate, every soldier is valuable, even those fallen from the honor expected of a Storm Knight. A group of such men—thieves, drunkards, and worse—comprise the Sixth Platoon. All they need is someone to lead them.

Lieutenant Hugh Madigan, a peerless warrior knighted during the reign of deposed King Vinter IV, has spent years in obscurity, punished for his loyalty to the former king. Now he has been ordered back to the front and given command of the Sixth, his task to turn a platoon of miscreants into elite soldiers fit to be called Storm Knights. Time is short, and war is coming. One way or another, Lieutenant Madigan must lead his men into the storm . . .

I wrote this for Privateer Press, for their Skull Island Expedition’s imprint, and it is actually novel length, not a novella like the last one I wrote for them. This is set in the world of Warmachine, except I wrote it in a manner that even if you aren’t familiar with the world this is a really good place to get into it. Cygnar is sort of similar to a fantasy Victorian England, and the guys I’m writing about are knights wielding magic mad science lightning swords and giant steam powered fighting robots in a war against a bunch of religious fanatics.

I had a lot of fun with this one. I’m really proud of it. It is a cross between Band of Brothers and the Dirty Dozen. The Storm Knights are an elite force, the pride of their nation, only these guys are the dregs. The left overs that nobody wants.  They are the bottom of the barrel, scraped together out of desperation. But it is a massive call up in prelude to an invasion, and it is all hands on deck, so they all get shoved off into one dead end platoon. And who better to lead a bunch of failures, than a commander who has already been dishonored? There was a coup a decade ago, and this particular knight was on the losing side, only he is very bad at losing.  🙂

These are some of my favorite characters I’ve gotten to work with. I’ll admit to getting a little emotional when I killed many of them. 🙂  (one downside of writing in somebody else’s IP is that you can’t just go killing off their big name characters, however, I made all of these guys up so NO ONE IS SAFE! Mwa HA HA HAH!)

I’m hoping people enjoy it, because there is a sequel just dying to be told. I’ll post again when it is available for sale.

This is actually my 10th published novel, so that’s kind of a milestone.

Geeky Hobbies: Sunday Afternoon Mini Painting

I love painting miniatures. I needed a hobby that wasn’t writing or shooting, so I picked out something else to further strain my vision. 🙂

Also, since I’m writing books for Privateer Press’ Warmachine universe now, technically this is research. In honor of getting a book done and the final edits out the door to them today, I celebrated with glamor shots.

First up, Bart the Pirate, who I painted a while ago, but hadn’t taken a glamour shot using my awesome paper towels hung over lamps light box and high tech iPhone.

Bart

Then MacBain, who I did some converting to make him not look so dumpy and it turned out kind of Singing in the Rain.

MacBain

This one is actually for my oldest daughter for her character in our IKRPG game.  (I gave her a cameo in the upcoming Into the Storm, so now she’s canon).

Juliana

Then the rest are of a Vanguard warjack for my Mercenary army. Because steam powered robots are awesome.

Vanguard 1

I actually did a bunch of conversion work on the legs because the default pose makes it look like it is squatting.

Vanguard 3

Yes, that is a very little MHI patch.

Vanguard 4

I sliced up the legs and pinned in some extra pieces of metal. I used round bits of the spue that parts come on.

Vanguard 6

And the free hand is Correia on one side, Monster on the other in Ordic. (the Portuguese equivelent in Warmachine)

Vanguard 7

EDIT: Current WiP-

Looks like the Warbound eBook is up early at Baen

It appears that the regular eBook for Warbound is available for download now directly from Baen. http://www.baenebooks.com/p-1918-warbound-book-iii-of-the-grimnoir-chronicles.aspx

I think you guys are really going to like this one.

And then go buy a hard copy on the week of August 6th. Because I really want to get a Grimnoir novel onto the NYT bestseller list. That is the sort of thing that gets movie producers to option stuff! 😀

EDIT: I am being told that it is downloadable on Amazon now too, if that is easier for you.  http://rcm-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/cm?lt1=_blank&bc1=000000&IS2=1&bg1=FFFFFF&fc1=000000&lc1=0000FF&t=monshuntnati-20&o=1&p=8&l=as4&m=amazon&f=ifr&ref=ss_til&asins=1451639260
