Geeky Hobbies: Little Space Dudes 2 (PanO from Infinity)

I told you guys I painted a bunch of these this year.  🙂

Up next, Pan Oceania. Since these are high tech space Catholics, I went with more of a cool blue and teal on the armor. For the knights, white sashes and red crosses. For the regular troops teal and jade green to make the armor pop. The bases I went with a sandy grey/yellow that offsets the armor color.

Group pic. I’ve got a couple of their TAGs (big robots) but have not painted them yet.

So the rank and file troops get the jade shoulder pads. It off sets the blue/sapphire washes I use for the armor.

Now I start to get into the white cloaks and crosses for the SPACE POPE!

The glow effect is for the hacker. The pic on that one doesn’t really do the light effect justice.

I do love these sculpts. They do such a good job on the faces, with enough depth that a decent paint job can really make them pop. These are fairly new, and way easier to paint faces than some of Corvus Belli’s older models.

Geeky Hobbies: Little space dudes (Ariadna from Infinity)

I haven’t done a Geeky Hobbies post for a while. Mostly because we had all those blog loading problems because of traffic and the big pictures didn’t help. But now MHN is on its own server so we should be good.

And I got a light box for Christmas. I’ve not put up any pictures of my Infinity minis. I’ve been on a scifi kick. I’ve only played this war game a handful of times, but I’ve been using these guys for a scifi RPG I’ve been running.

I’ll do other posts for each army, because I’ve painted a ton of these now. Up first, my Ariadna army. These guys are a sort of low tech, American, French, Russian, Scottish,  mix on a backwoods planet. So I went for a sort of GI Joe theme. I try to tie the whole army together by using a similar design on the base too. So basically Ariadna looks like Alabama. Red dirt, lots of plants. (that’s mostly real moss, foam flock, and white glue)

Oh yeah. And they have space werewolves. That’s Steve’s Writer Nerd Game Night character. His request? Idris Elba-Space Werewolf. As a GM, how could I possibly say no to that?

image

This link team was an experiment in camo patterns. These guys were speed painted in one night, probably two hours for the whole group (not counting zenithal priming, and green base coat from air brush, obviously) but the flecktarn effect still looks pretty good. I used little bits of blister foam to get the patterns. I think I might go back and clean these guys up with better armor and gun shading to do them justice.

image

These I took more time on. They’re Spetsnaz, so I had to do all those little stripes. The middle fig is actually from a different army, but I painted him up as Ariadna because he fit the RPG I’m running. That’s the infamous mobster Krasnov. 🙂 (i.e. my silliest bad accent RPG character)

image

and the back on these so you can get the full detail of all those darned little red free hand stars.
image

image

The guys above I took a little bit of time on. The armor on the left is actually all done with washes over zenithal priming and came out pretty neat. The R stands for Rocko. 🙂 BECAUSE THAT’S HOW WINNIN’ GETS DONE. Sorry. Writer Nerd Game Night inside joke.

image

Space Scots. Same camo flecktarn sponge pattern. Tartan stripes are a lot of work on somebody who is 28mm tall.

image

Briscard link team. Mountain troops, so I kind of wanted an alpine color vibe. Skipped the camo. The grays actually work really good on the table top.

And below, because I forgot to leave a space for words when I was posting these pics, a few misc, another pain the butt kilt on Space William Wallace there, but the shotgun girl came out really good. The rescue guy with the ax, I tried various color washes on the coat, but he came out kind of muddy.

The Portuguese smuggler (I kid you not) came out pretty good. The orange stripe is because that’s a wet suit under the armor. The Call of Duty skull mask on the next guy, meh… It didn’t come off the way I hoped. And then I’m not sure why the Russian armored guy pointing ended up with what looks like a Star Fleet logo on his shoulder, but it was one of the first minis I was experimenting on with this army and I wasn’t sure on free hand for them yet.

image

Above. A really big gun. You know that dude is going to end up on disability with back problems.

Below, the first minis I painted for this army, experimenting and looking for a scheme. Notice that the later ones had a lot more use of color. The problem with painting realistic camo patterns on a 28mm miniature is that from eyeball distance on a table, they just look muddy. You need more splashes of color than you would have in real life to give them some visual contrast and pop.

image

And of course, Vivian James, because Ariadna would totally be in GamerGate. The medic I’m kind of meh on the paint job. His face is smooshed.

And the group shot.

Smash these pumpkins, SJWs :)

I saw an interview this morning. Fifteen minutes after reading this, I’d written a song in honor of Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins fame being added to the growing list of artists sick of bossy Social Justice Warriors. I present to you the song:

Bullets Are Scary So I’m Triggered But Butterfly Wings Are Okay (as long as they aren’t Sexist Butterflies)

Social Justice is a vampire, sent to drain
creative freedom, Twitter mobs go up in flames
What do artists get, for their pain ay ain?
Pajama boy desires! And blue haired games
Even though we know-I suppose we’ll show
If this doesn’t rhyme, it’s ‘cause you’re racist!
Duh duh duh duh dun
Despite all my rage I’m still just a land whale on Twitter!
Despite all my rage I’m still just a land whale on Twitter!
Once artistic freedom is lost it can never be saved
Despite all my rage I’m still just a land whale on Twitter!
CULTURAL APPROPRIATION!
You gave in. Now we own you,
but can you fake it, for just one more Hugo?
And what do you want? To be left alone.
But what have you got?
When your books are lame
Even though social justice knows
you can’t win and it shows
a cold wind blows
DUN DUN DUN CULTURAL APPROPRIATION!
Despite all my rage I’m still just a land whale on Twitter!
Despite all my rage I’m still just a land whale on Twitter!
Once artistic freedom is lost it can never be saved
Despite all my rage I’m still just a land whale on Twitter!
(Insert cool guitar Riff here!)
Tell me I’m the social justice one. Tell me there’s no free ones
Che Guevara is our favorite son
Tell me I’m the social justice one. Tell me there’s no Wrong Fun
And all the good reviews go to yoooooooouuuuuuuu
Despite all my rage I’m still just a land whale on Twitter
Despite all my rage I’m still just a land whale on Twitter
Once artistic freedom is lost it can never be saved
Despite all my rage I’m still just a land whale on TWIIIIIIITEEEER

BOOK BOMB! Unforgettable by Eric James Stone

It is Book Bomb time!

Out of sight, out of mind.

In the near future, a fluke of quantum mechanics renders Nat Morgan utterly forgettable. No one can remember he exists for more than a minute after he’s gone. It’s a useful ability for his career as a CIA agent, even if he has to keep reminding his boss that he exists.

Nat’s attempt to steal a quantum chip prototype is thwarted when a former FSB agent, Yelena Semyonova, attempts to steal the same technology for the Russian mob.

Along with a brilliant Iranian physicist who wants to defect, Nat and Yelena must work together to stop a ruthless billionaire from finishing a quantum supercomputer that will literally control the fate of the world.

Unforgettable
by Eric James Stone
Unforgettable

This is Eric James Stone’s first Baen book, and I’m really excited for him. I’ve known Eric since I first got published. He’s one of the most prolific short fiction writers alive. In fact, my favorite short story of all time is still probably his Tabloid Reporter to the Stars.

For those of you new to Book Bombs, the goal is to get as many people as possible to buy an author’s book on the same day. The more books sell, the higher it gets in the rankings, the more new people see it. If it is something that you would be interested in reading anyway, getting it the same time as a bunch of other folks pushes it up in the ratings, which means more publicity, exposure, and new fans. Success breeds success, and a good Book Bomb can get an author hundreds of new fans.

We steer people toward Amazon for this because it is big, has lots of eyes on it, and has an constantly updating sales rank, but if you prefer to purchase somewhere else go for it, because the most important thing is that the author GETS PAID. 🙂

Thanks everybody. Eric is a great guy, who could use a publicity boost for his first book. Please check it out and spread the word. The more people who get involved, the better.

I’ll be updating the stats through the day to see what we accomplish.

##

Right now the sales ranking for the paperback is:

Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #35,726 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

And the eBook is at

Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #10,228 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

EDIT 1:

Okay, it looks like the numbers from last night have started trickling in on the rankings. This morning we are at:

Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #11,775 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

and in Kindle

Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #3,906 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

So we’re moving right along. Today is the actual Book Bomb. If we keep up the momentum and keep spreading the word we should see that keep ticking up throughout the day. If things go normally we should see the peak late tonight.

EDIT: at 1:00 MST we’re changing the tag line
Out of sight, out of mind. Out of stock.

Apparently we cleaned Amazon out of paperbacks today, so now the books are going to be back ordered. It will probably take a little bit for the paperback ranking to catch up with that. I’m actually curious what that will do to the final numbers tonight, because I’m not sure how they calculate based on orders processed versus back orders. Either way, this is good, because Eric GETS PAID.

Ebooks are still clicking along. I guess you can’t really run out of electrons.
Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #2,442 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

EDIT:  at 3:25 MST the numbers are still ticking along,  but I sure do miss the old Wild West days of crazy hourly swings. 🙂

Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #8,666 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #2,098 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

EDIT: 9:00 MST, it looks like running out of paperbacks did stall the numbers a bit. Shoot. I always like breaking top 100 in a genre.

Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #5,849 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

But the Kindle book is still moving along

Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #1,407 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Will we break top 20 in a genre for Eric tonight? Fingers crossed. That’s the best way to start the next morning. But that’s my last update for the night. I’m going to go stream the last few episodes of season 4 of Person of Interest. 🙂

EDIT: It is 9 in the morning here. It does look like the paperback’s ascent stalled out when they ran out of inventory, but the Kindle book is up there. I don’t know what the peak was last night, but as of right now it is at:

Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #956 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Next BOOK BOMB, Thursday the 7th! Unforgettable by Eric James Stone

Mark your calendars, our next Book Bomb is going to be Thursday the 7th, for Unforgettable by Eric James Stone.

Eric is a really good guy, probably one of the greatest short fiction writers alive, and now he is a fellow Baen author. I introduced him to Toni Weisskopf a few years ago, and she loved Unforgettable. Eric has won some Prestigious Literary Awards and stuff, but we won’t hold that against him. (come on, it was about Space Whales! That novella was awesome.)

The goal of a Book Bomb is to get as many people as possible to purchase a specific book on the same day on Amazon, that way the book is shoved up the sales ratings, so that it shows up on more lists, so that more new readers see it. Success breeds success, and the author gets more exposure than they normally otherwise would have.

Because Amazon has put in a really long delay between the purchases and the changing of the sales rank numbers (and watching the crazy swings through the day was half the fun) I tried an experiment with the last Book Bomb for Her Brother’s Keeper by Kupari, by actually starting the Book Bomb the night before, so by the morning of the actual Book Bomb day, it was already on the rise. That seemed to help the author’s stats, so we’ll be doing the same thing this time. I’ll actually put up the official post on the night of the 6th to get things rolling for the night owls. That way by the 7th it should already be rising.

The delay still sucks though, and we probably won’t see our max highest ranking until the middle of the night when everybody is in bed. On the bright side though, they usually hang out up there for a few days after, which means lots of new eyeballs see the book.

So tell your friends. Eric is a great guy, super talented, you guys get a cool new book, but the whole point of the Book Bombs is to get a worthy author some more exposure and new readers (well, and most importantly, the author GETS PAID) 🙂
