Part of the process in doing coins is after the molds are done, they test them by striking coins out of a different metal to make sure the molds are correct before using the more expensive metals and doing all of the inlay magic.

  1. A basic topic, but an essential one. Whenever you get big enough to have guests, having some writers from mediums beyond novels (comic books, video games, tv/movie) giving their opinions on how prospective works there might be interesting. In video games, second person narration is really common (“To the west you can see a natural light. For the first time in your life, you are looking at the outside world.”, “It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue”, “You must gather your party before venturing forth” etc.) and effectively mandatory if there’s character creation. First person narration with a player made character in video games has been attempted, but beyond reminders in journals (“Ajira told me that the Staff of Magnus is in Assu, a sorcerer’s cave on the slopes of Mount Kand northwest of Molag Mar.”) and dialog options it NEVER works well (not even “only a very good writer can pull this off”).

    For keeping prospective separate with multiple first person with characterization, I understand this is easier in non-English languages where different speakers can use different wording quirks. Japanese can have very, very strong differences between speakers, with different forms of “I”, ways to end sentences, and more to the point translations have to struggle with “flattening” characterization by losing these.

  2. I’m not going to start drama, so I won’t name names, but how do you two respond to people (some very big names with history of mentoring other big names) who preach the gospel of 3rd Person and no other?

    2. Never mind, I was only 2/3 way through podcast when I wrote this question, and next bit I turn it on Larry starts with mentioning some people say only do third person. I need to stop commenting until I finish the episode I guess.

  3. Regarding your how Rian Johnson did a better job with Knives Out than Star Wars – he’s a nihilist, and believes that people are bad. Look at the cast of Knives Out – the only one who is relatively moral is the illegal immigrant nurse. The investigator is interested in nothing other than his paycheck, and the family members are all horrible people. That tone works for Knives Out, up to a point, but to have no heroes / no moral characters in Star Wars gave us the movie we got.

    1. I would add that if you’re going to take a well establish IP with a fanbase to make a good movie you have to know and love the IP yourself. I’m not convinced Johnson really knew, much less loved, the series (being a nihilist and all). Frankly, I’m not fully convince Abrams loved the series, and only had some understanding of it.

      Take, say, Peter Jackson and the Lord of the Rings. Dude loved and knew the story. I disagree with some of his changes to the story not required due to differences in the medium, but it felt like Lord of the Rings. You listen to Jackson talk about the series and you can tell in interviews he loves it and had this vision of making it alive that just exuded from him. Similar with

  5. Dunno if this is the right place, but will there be any episodes on finding agents/publishers that aren’t woke? Seems like this is becoming a significant problem in the traditional space and is just pushing more people toward indie. I know you mentioned an episode on conventions and I think one on writing conferences could also be useful in navigating the increasingly woke terrain therein.

  6. RE: Multiple character first person POV

    One of the best of these was the novel Forbidden Planet. Philip MacDonald (aka W J Stuart) wrote the novel after the movie release. Each chapter is in first person, but changes chapter by chapter to one of four characters. Brilliant work.

    1. Dracula is another notable example, with its use of recovered documents from various people as a narrative device. It cheats keeping voices separate by starting each chapter with the name and (in-story) source of the chapter’s content.

  7. @Jack In the latest episode (Tertiary Characters) your bump and ad are SUPER quiet compared to Larry and Steve on Google Podcast. I’m not sure if its the same throughout. I don’t mean this as a complaint, but if I was producing I would want to know something like that to correct: especially the ad portion because $$$.
