Lieutenant Hugh Madigan, a peerless warrior knighted during the reign of deposed King Vinter IV, has spent years in obscurity, punished for his loyalty to the former king. Now he has been ordered back to the front and given command of the Sixth, his task to turn a platoon of miscreants into elite soldiers fit to be called Storm Knights. Time is short, and war is coming. One way or another, Lieutenant Madigan must lead his men into the storm . . .
This is one of the projects that I did for Privateer Press for their Warmachine universe. For all of my regular fans I will say that you do not need to be familiar with that world or the game to enjoy this one. My goal was to write it so that it would be a great intro to the world, and I am really super pleased with how this one came out.
For those of you not familiar with Warmachine, think steampunk Dirty Dozen crossed with fantasy Band of Brothers, only with heavily armored knights wielding mad science lightning swords and steam powered fighting robots invading a city of religious fanatics.
And it is totally badass. I loved these characters, and I knew it was good when I wrapped it up and I was bummed that it was somebody else’s world so I couldn’t just go completely nuts and do whatever I wanted with them in the future. It was a lot of fun playing in somebody else’s sandbox.

Larry has said that writing is his full time, 9-5 job, 5 days a week. It’s astounding what you can crank out if you don’t wait for the muse, but just pound the keyboard full time. If the current scene isn’t working, go to a different one. Or the next book. If you refuse to believe in writer’s block, then it doesn’t stop you.
Issac Asimov wrote so much in his life that most folks thought that each genre he wrote in was it, and was highly prolific at that. For instance, most folks don’t realize that he wrote far more science stuff, including books and encyclopedia articles, than he ever did SF.
And still many other folks believed that he’d lent his name to a writing group. Nope, it was all him. I’ve worn out, and replaced, his fantastic commentary on Shakespeare’s works.
Harlan Ellison also springs to mind. Supposedly 120wpm with 2 fingers is an amazing sight.
Another writer, I forget his name, used to run a roll of butcher paper through his typewriter so he wouldn’t have to lose writing time reloading pages.
The pulp writers all pounded it out to try to feed the rent, food, medical and other demons. Larry, being steeped in B-movie lore has presumably learned a thing or two about producing from the guys who wrote them.
And good on him!
This is why I like to read your books: they’re very much like the Warhammer stuff. Especially the ones about Ragnar the Space Marine by William King–another talented action writer.
Into the storm sounds like a true adventure. Will it be going to audio and will Dead Six also be on audio at some point?
That’s what I love about you, your versatility. You can shift gears from from one genre of writing to the next. Some of your works defy any particular genre category because they work on so many different levels. The Grimnoir series works as an urban fantasy, an alternate universe, and an alien invasion/sci-fi story. MHI works as an action comedy, and as a horror/adventure story.
Correia. Steampunk. Dirty Dozen. Sold me based on that. Loved it. Reviewed it.
This book was amazingly good. I really love the MHI and the Grimnoir books, but I didn’t know this book existed until it popped up on Amazon. You should rep this book more. It’s not only really entertaining; it also really makes the Warmachine universe look amazingly great. Thanks for another great story.
