Updates: D6 countdown and my goatee is missing

For the first time in over a decade, I shaved.

I look like I'm about to approve your home loan

And now you can see why I always have a goatee.  This travesty happened because I was talking to my kids and it came up that none of them had ever seen me without facial hair. They had no idea what I looked like.

Now they know… And they would like Normal Dad back. My wife won’t kiss me, because ten minutes after I shave I have Homer Simpson face, and that’s with a ridiculous razor that has like 6 blades on it. Luckily, I’m Portuguese, so I’ll grow my beard back within a week.

In other news, Dead Six is out in only 2 weeks. Celebrate Kill A Terrorist day with a book that kills a whole mess of terrorists. If you want a copy autographed by both me and Mike (which is a bit of a challenge, since he is in Afghanistan) Uncle Hugos has a limited number with bookplates signed by both of us from before he deployed: http://www.unclehugo.com/prod/ah-correia-larry.php  (you can also pick up one of the hardcovers where they actually had me autograph a page and then BOUND it into the book!)

If you don’t care about autographs, it is on Amazon, B&N, and you can get the eBook from www.baen.com.

And while I’m thinking about it, here is a little short story about my D6 character’s background that I wrote a couple of years ago. It is pretty darn awesome and it involves a whole bunch of people getting shot with an Ithica, a revolution, and a BTR on technical chase, which is always nice.  http://larrycorreia.wordpress.com/2009/02/26/online-fiction-sweothi-city/

After writing for 10 hours on Saturday (and only getting a 5,700 words) I took Sunday off and didn’t write anything other than the last blog post. I hung out with my kids, scared them with my chin, then I painted miniatures. Painting minis is what I do when I need to just uncheck my brain. I’m getting better at them too. I just need to figure out how to take decent pictures of the little things and I’ll post some up.

Of course, I’m eagerly awaiting the new GI Joe movie, because that means new action figures for me to chop up for more custom MHI figures! Only I’ve learned to paint way better since my last attempt.

This Saturday I am going to be teaching a seminar on how to write action scenes to the League of Utah Writers in Logan. My friend, Super Author John Brown, will be there, so it should be fun.

So lots of writing to do this week and I need to take my son shooting (it is his turn for one on one instruction), so should be pretty busy.

I am now on Twitter. @monsterhunter45 because somebody else had already taken @LarryCorreia. And you know that Larry Correia probably doesn’t have an awesome goatee either.

  1. This seems like a good place & time to ask: among the various way I can get a copy, is there one that affords you (and authors in general) a bigger cut?

    1. I get the highest % from eBook sales, but during release week and preorders I like when folks buy hard copies for the stat boost on the bestseller lists. 🙂

      1. And here I was a little ashamed of my love of eBooks because I thought authors got the least % cut from them. Time to buy more eBooks!

Also, is the % better for eARCs or do you get more from the actual release edition?

      2. Already read the eARC, but went on and ordered my dual signed copy from Uncle Hugo’s anyway.

See how much some of us love you, Larry ;). 😛

Seriously, D6 is a worthy piece that deserves to be skyrocketed into the single digits on the NYT Bestseller list.

  2. As far as photographing minis, it’s all in the lighting and a decent macro lens.

Google “light box” and you’ll get an idea of what helps with the lighting. I built one out of pvc and a $3 white bedsheet, used some heat lamp housings from Fleet Farm with “natural wavelength” mini-florescent bulbs, and use my D-SLR on a tripod with a remote for the shutter. Lots of trial and error after that to balance the light saturation without washing out all the details.

It also works great for gun photos too.

I can’t seem to find any of my miniature photos using my box online though… ah well. I’ll have to do something about that.

I need to paint some stuff to…

  3. Yo Larry
Grow the fur back!…lol…Serious question.. Ever think about getting some Lowers with the MHI logo? I’ll buy one for sure… probably have to order a lot of them BUT.. ask your public… filled with red paint!! or Slime Green?…

  4. Look up the website THE MINIATURES PAGE.

    theminiaturespage.com

An interesting site for people interested in wargaming miniatures.

  5. Home loan? You look like you’re about to bury my grandfather! I feel your pain the 10 o’clock … er … 5 o’clock shadow though. and, one reason i went into my line of work was no ties.

  6. Larry,

It figures. I finally get my 37″ flat screen boob tube hooked up and the first thing I see? Your clean shaven face in the picture destined to live in infamy as the “Home Aloner”.

Having spoken with your delightful self in person for most of an excellent afternoon, I am familiar with your proper visage. Now, I’m looking beyond appearance to the inner beauty that I know is still there.

Please do not post any more pictures of your bare chin; we don’t want to confuse future biographers. Nor do we wish to frighten groupies, fans or publishers.

As we all have learned from various portions of the internet and restricted sale magazines, removal of the post-adolescent hair does not always improve one’s appearance.

  7. In other news, on Uncle Hugo’s Larry Correia page http://www.unclehugo.com/prod/ah-correia-larry.php
I note that 4 of the 5 books listed have a “Recommended by Don.”

Monster Hunter Alpha is the odd man out. I suspect Don is taking a break to clean zombie slushie from his hair and glasses before adding his recommendation.

If the snow blower sequence doesn’t garner the Hugo next year, the winning author will taste ashes every time he sees the trophy.

  8. Bro, this photo is historic! Who knew that under that devilish facial hair lurked the impish smile of a nice guy! Hah! My Dad had a mustache the whole time I was a kid, and so far as I know has never shaved it while I have been an adult. Only record I have of him not having the mustache, are photos of him from his 20s right around the time he got married. I think it’s good for kids to see that, at least once. Just so they can remember that you are not = your facial hair.

  9. Not to offend anyone, but without his beard-let, I think Larry looks like a Dean of the Business School. “I’d like to thank you for your continued financial support for the Preposterously Overendowed School of Business here at Blue State U . . .”

  10. If there’s an MHI lower, make mine sliime green on a black receiver. Because a green receiver with a black logo would be too hard to match with an upper.
