They just announced the finalists for the Hugos, and well, look who is on the list:

John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer
Award for the best new professional science fiction or fantasy writer of 2009 or 2010, sponsored by Dell Magazines
Saladin Ahmed
Lauren Beukes
Larry Correia
Lev Grossman
Dan Wells
For those of you that don’t know, the John W. Campbell Award is a pretty big deal. Being nominated as one of the five finalists is great. The Hugos are sort of like the Oscars for sci-fi and fantasy writers, and the Campbell is a separate award for best new writer.
The winners will be announced at WorldCon in August. Anyone who was a voting member of WorldCon last year or this year, may vote. It is in Reno this time, which is about as close as it will ever be to me, so I will be attending.
Thank you very much to all of you that nominated me, and I’m especially thankful for all of the Barflies. You guys are awesome.
As far as the other Campbell finalists go, I’m unfamiliar with the work of three of them, so now I’ll have to check them out. Dan Wells, however… I’m a fan. He’s the guy that wrote I Am Not A Serial Killer, Mr. Monster, and I Don’t Want to Kill You. (which I’ve reviewed and book bombed here) He’s also got a new YA series coming out soon, and a sci-fi thriller where a character based on me is one of the primary villains. Yep. We’re friends. In fact, we’re in the same game group. I can now truthfully say that my RPG night has 40% of the best new writers in the country in it. Yes, and we are in fact, totally awesome.
Obviously I want to win, but if I don’t, then I’m rooting for Dan.
I’ve got several more friends among the other category’s nominees. Eric James Stone in Best Novelette, Mary Robinette Kowal in Best Short, Writing Excuses for Related Work, and Howard Tayler for Best Graphic Story.
EDIT: Remember last week when somebody said I wasn’t a real writer because I had *only* been #27 on the NYT? Well, now I’ve been nominated for a prestigious award for “excellence in the field”. BURN! So suck it, losers. 🙂
Congratulations!
I would like to say that I find it extremely coincidental that you are a finalist the week after I gave a speech announcing that you had won a Hugo for Speech class.
So if you or Wells win, are you going to lord it over the other at game nights? You need to have a good bet going on about that 🙂
Ah, finishing your post by quoting the immortal Daniel Tosh. I always love a well placed “SUCK IT!”
Congrats, Larry! Well done and well earned.
Best,
Gray
Congratulations, Larry. 🙂 That’s pure awesome with extra awesomesauce!
Congrats Larry.
I did not realize you are that new to the business. Your work doesn’t feel like a new writers stuff.
Congrats, Larry! 🙂
PFFFT. Whatever. You’re not a real author. Ignorant collectivist fuckhead said so on another post. Quit lyin’.
Hehe. Awesome. Congratulations. Now the geek in me is wondering what you guys play on gaming nights. =)
Legend of the Five Rings. 🙂
Neat, always liked that game. Thanks for answering! =)
Bloody well deserved Larry! Congratulations! I’m going to have to get some of that Dan Wells stuff. Which for me is a stretch as I don’t like horror films/books at all.
I got all my exposure to that horrible stuff through gaming instead. Annnnd I think I may have failed a sanity check or two… sometimes. Maybe.
Well done, Larry! That’s a big honor, even if you don’t win.
Congratulations! Best of luck on the final voting!
With all the writing and book promotion, how do you and Dan Wells manage to find time to keep a campaign going?
We only get to play once a month, but by golly, we make time for Writer Nerd Game Night.
Hi! Just a correction — according to the rules, “the final ballot will only be open to attending and supporting members of Renovation.” Your post suggests that those who attended last year’s Worldcon are elegible to vote. They were eligible to *nominate*, but not to vote on the final ballot. 🙂 Good luck!
Congrats for the more than well deserved nomination. Your work has been excellent. Dead Six cant get here early enough. I read Hard Magic as soon as it showed up as an ARC and I have read the monster hunter series multiple times. I am sure I speak for all your readers when I say keep pushing the books out we will read them. Also Argggh on another recommendation for Dan Wells, I already don’t have enough hours in the day. Again Congrats!!
