Yep, $6. Go download the eBook for Hard Magic, book 1 of the Grimnoir Chronicles. It is pretty darn awesome, if I do say so myself… In all honesty, I do believe that this is the best thing I’ve ever written.
Think of it as a pulp-noir, action, hard-boiled, alternative-history, fantasy set in an alternative 1932. This book features a teleporting magic ninja fight on top of a flaming pirate dirigible. 🙂 You can read the first quarter of the book for free at the link above.
Or, for a little light reading set in the same universe, here is a prequel short, called Detroit Christmas. http://www.baen.com/DetroitChristmas.asp

Sweet, I get it two weeks early! I know what I’m doing tonight.
This answers the question of what I’m going to read when I get home.
Larry, you realize you are causing me problems? I keep trying to write my own stuff but what free time I have is consumed by reading your work or waiting anxiously for the next one you put out!
You can’t write while waiting for Larry’s next work?
Done and done.
What he said
I am psychic you know? I can actually see the future!
I see very clearly that shortly after work I’ll be reading Hard Magic on my shiny n’ awesome Sony reader.
Now for the rest of you folks – Need your futures told? Guaranteed to be at least as inaccurate as a totally random guess – Bargain prices too! 🙂
Mr. Correia Sir, will you sign my ebook?
You got my hopes up for the ARC of Alpha.
Curse you, You tease! 🙂
Looks like I’ll be paying you twice for this book too! I can’t wait to read the rest of the book after seeing the teaser chapters, and I’ll be buying a dead tree version for the daughter and bookshelf when it comes out. It’s a conspiracy I tell you!
Getting it tonight as soon as I get home.
Larry, does your cut differ based on the format? I’m wondering whether to prefer ebooks or hard copies to support authors.
(Yeah, I know — “buy ’em all”. I haven’t the room or cash for that!)
Larry should probably confirm for Larry, but the general idea IIRC is that since there’s no actual material costs or need to, yanno, print the thing, that authors get a larger share of the sale from ebooks than they do from deadtree.
At least, that’s the way it works via Webscriptions. I’d be interested to know if it works the same thru Barnes & Noble, or Amazon.
I make the most on a hard cover, second most on an e-book, least ona paperback. However, e-books don’t count toward the bestseller lists.
So basically, buy whichever one makes you happiest. 🙂
Great book Larry. Finished it the other day when it came out on Webscriptions. I agree this may be your best do far, looking forward to the next one along with MHA and the one you are doing with John.
Skippy want E-arc of MHA!
Read the ARC already and damn good stuff! I’ll get the new version just to have the new copy and support my favorite new author.
Damn it… here I thought this was a book I hadn’t owned for almost three months.
I would buy it Larry, but I’m a sucker for dead trees, and having ardered my autographed copy a long time ago, I’ll just wait till that one arrives in my mail box.
Yes!! If I lived closer to you I would grill you steaks and mow your yard for this greatness
Loved it. I like the way the chapter headings show the divergence from our timeline.
Does the ‘Bonus Army’ get mistreated as badly in that timeline?
Yes. Very much. The next one takes place in ’33, mostly around the DC area, so we get into that a bit.
The amazing thing to me is, I’ve bougth Baen ebooks several times in the past. Ordered them a day or two early, ordered them on release day. And had problems. And yet here your book is, two weeks early AND delivered painlessly……
I do believe that they’ve been putting a lot of work in to make the system more efficient and it shows.
Bought it and finished it last night.
It was like a bag of hot roasted peanuts at the ballpark -tasty, addictive, and finished far too quickly.
I was determined to stay away from the Grimnoir chronicles, but Detroit Christmas sucked me in. I’ll be picking up the dead tree version soon.
