Quick Mini Painting WiP Pics

Mostly posting so I can host the pics somewhere so that I can post these to the Privateer Press forum for feedback.

I’m trying a new basing experiment. I wanted to make a splash effect. I green stuff and kitty littered a base, painted it, then  cut bits of blister plastic into the splashes and glued them down. Then I brushed it all with Woodland Scenics Realistic Water.

It actually looks nicer in person too, very translucent and shiny, but I think I need to get rounder shapes in the water next time. The hard points make it look more like ice.

  1. Heat gun. Melt until drippy looking, then shape into ballistic curve.

Miniatures are surprisingly difficult to get looking right. That’s why I switched to building real cars. Its easier. 🙂

  2. I do washes, and I’m pretty good with a dry brush, but your pics look like you do some other form of shading altogether. How do you do it? I read a book by John Dallimore of Wargames Foundry, but I couldn’t understand what he was talking about.

    1. Most of my shading one color is lay down a base coat. And then paint in the darker colors in the low/shadow spots. Then mix in white (or other lighter color) with the base colors for the high spots. Then more white. Then more. I think the technical term for that is layering. Depending on what it is, I’ll usually wash it before or after. On some colors it is pointless to wash after because it overpowers the shading.
