Busy week and random updates

First and most important, remember to buy, and thus Book Bomb the hell out of Variant tomorrow, November 10th, and tell your friends to buy the hell out of Variant tomorrow, to help out the ill and recently laid off friend of mine, Rob Wells. http://www.amazon.com/dp/0062026089/ref=as_li_tf_til?tag=monshuntnati-20&camp=14573&creative=327641&linkCode=as1&creativeASIN=0062026089&adid=1B4V4Y5278KQEEAA7GPS&&ref-refURL=http%3A%2F%2Frcm.amazon.com%2Fe%2Fcm%3Ft%3Dmonshuntnati-20%26o%3D1%26p%3D8%26l%3Das1%26asins%3D0062026089%26ref%3Dtf_til%26fc1%3D000000%26IS2%3D1%26lt1%3D_blank%26m%3Damazon%26lc1%3D0000FF%26bc1%3D000000%26bg1%3DFFFFFF%26f%3Difr

Right now Rob is at: Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #6,068 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I want to see if we can’t get him to #1.

EDIT: Nevermind, he’s in the same category as The Hunger Games. 🙂  Let’s shoot for top 10.

In other news, I went to the dentist last week, for the very first time in 5 years… Yeah, I know. Don’t yell at me. I was self-employed for 3 of those and didn’t have dental insurance, and since I’ve had my super awesome day job with insurance, I’ve been too busy and procrastinating.  That said, the good news is I only had a single tiny cavity, which isn’t too shabby at all for a man with an aversion to flossing. The bad news is that I had a chipped tooth, broken a filling, and cracked a crown. I spent two hours yesterday getting grinded on, and get to go back for 3 more visits.

My next door neighbor is my dentist. I need so many repairs that I’m sure he’ll purchase himself a new snowmobile this year to ride around Yard Moose Mountain. I want him to name it Correia’s Teeth.  On a serious note, I’ll plug Capitol Dental in Ogden, because they made having a jagged chunk of porcelein extracted from your gum about as pleasant as could be.

In other news, I’m still cranking along on Monster Hunter Legion. I have a killer deadline, and I’m working hard to get it wrapped up by Christmas. MHL will be out in September 2012.  After that I’ll either be working on the series with John Ringo, depending on where John is on the outline, or I’ll start working on Warbound. The sequel to Dead Six will be worked on at the same time. Mike doesn’t get back from Afghanistan until February or March, but my half of Swords of Exodus is mostly done already.

I will get the Bookscan numbers for Spellbound’s release week tomorrow. I have absolutely no idea how it is doing. So far my MH series is my bestseller, with even the ones that have been out for a few years still turning in solid numbers every single week.  MHI has remarkable staying power. MHA made it 12 weeks in the top 50 in fantasy nationwide. Hard Magic has done well, but not up to MH numbers, though I need to remember that hard backs and trades cost more, and the mass market isn’t out until next year, so I suppose it is actually doing pretty darn. Dead Six has done respectable, but not a big hit like the others. I don’t know if that is because it is out of my regular genre, or because there is a coauthor, which is too bad, because it is awesome.

The day job has been hopping. I don’t talk about it much on here, but the small military contractor I work for has been growing steadily and winning new contracts. I’m getting an assistant soon, which will be very nice. I figure I’ve got about one more year of doing the two jobs thing, and then I’ll need to start phasing myself out.

Speaking of multiple jobs, November 1st was a milestone. I let my CCW instructor certifications lapse. I hadn’t taught a class in a year. I’ve just been so busy with work and writing that the idea of killing a whole Saturday to teach a pistol class was just impossible. I will miss it, but there was just no way I could stay current and give the quality class that I wanted to. Back in 2007-2008 I was one of the busiest instructors in the state, teaching 10-50 person classes three or four times a month.

It was a lot of fun, I met a lot of wonderful people, and learned a ton. You wouldn’t believe some of the stories I’ve heard. I got to certify a couple thousand people, and I know of a few of them who had someting bad happen, and were then able to go on and get their money’s worth. 🙂  I will miss teaching.

  1. I can’t wait for MHL or MHN for that matter, and I’m loving Spellbound. I’ve got to tell you I picked up Dead Six based on a reading you did at dragoncon and the fact that you are one of the best writers on the market today and I could not put it down. I’m psyched waiting for next book in the series because I want to see what became of Valentine and how Lorenzo will get back in the business. All in all I’ve been super pleased with everything you’ve put your name on that I’ve picked up. So guys if you’re reading this and Dead Six is on the bottom of your must read list, it shouldn’t be this book was awesome and I would love to see this book turned into a movie, more action than the Expendables. Give Mike my regards and tell him he has a fan waiting for more from him.

  2. We just picked up Dead Six to give to a friend for his birthday we will also add it to our collection as well as Spellbound. We have all the MHI books as well :0). I hope to buy your friends book as well.

  3. I wonder if Dead Six did not do well because of palcement/stocking. I know my local B&N had it at the bottom of the new paper back shelf. And it was in regular fiction, so I had to ask a lady to help me find it because I was looking in SciFi. Though, the last time I went there I saw they had Dead Six in both sections.
I know stocking can have impacts on people buying, so maybe it did not get the book store push. Though, admittedly, B&N has been slacking here and elsewhere about where they should be putting new books and where they actually put new books.

  4. I have found the perfect flossing tool. It’s like an electric toothbrush, except it’s a flosser. I use mine in the shower.

They don’t make the powered flossers any more, but I bought a couple while they were available. The unpowered versions are available at walmart.

Unfortunately, they’re out of stock, or I’d have bought about 10. They use exactly the same disposable head as the unpowered version, and they last a looong time. They use one AA battery in an O-ring sealed compartment

I despise wrapping the floss around my fingers, but with this, I floss daily with my morning shower, and my dentists always smile and say it’s obvious.

I’ve used the unpowered versions too, and they still beat the heck out of strangled purple fingers crammed into my mouth.

  5. Gaah, I just finished Monster Hunter Alpha (loved it, btw) and now I hear I’ve got to wait almost a year? I’d say, “type faster”, but I follow your twitter site. Ah well, on to Hard Magic. Thanks for filling the void with a new series!

  6. Ok, this might just be a mom thing – but you might be cutting yourself out of a bit younger crowd with the F-bombs. I know, it’s realistic. But as much as I love your books and I do – it bugs me. And I don’t pass them along to my teenagers because of it. I have a 16yo son I’d actually love to pass along Dead Six to – he needs to read something not sci-fi/fantasy once in a while. But that was the worst so far on the language.

    1. I promise you, if you have a sixteen year old, he hears much, much worse at school every day. Or on his video games if he has any.

  7. WARBOUND! I can’t wait for the next Grimnoir Chronicles story. I love the direction the series is headed in. Granted I can’t wait for the next Monster Hunter either. And the John Ringo project! When do you think we can hear more about that?

  8. I just found your books this year; in the course of about two months, I polished off all the Monster Hunter books. Then I find out I have to wait a year for the next one! I am really not happy with you right now, dude. However, I will read Dead Six and probably move on to Hard Magic. I can’t promise I’ll be exclusively faithful, as I just found Iron Druid. Make me wait too long and I guess I have a wandering eye…

  9. STI owes you a commission on one (1) 9mm 4.15 tactical, purchased by my son after reading “Dead Six”. I owe you a hearty thanks, since I’ll get to shoot it without first suffering the painful cash extraction usually required. You are quite the salesman. We like all of your books and are eagerly awaiting the sequel to…well, everything.
