Barack Obama wants to have a chat with my kids

This letter came home with my kids today.

September 3, 2009

Dear Parents,

On September 8th, the first day of school for many children across America, the President of the United States will deliver a national address directly to students on the importance of education. He will challenge them to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning. He will also advocate every child receiving the best education possible so they ultimately can compete for good jobs and live rewarding and productive lives in their communities.

Because this is the first time an American president has spoken directly to the nationa’s school children abou suceeding in school, U.S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, has encouraged principals, teachers and students nationwide to watch this live broadcast next Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. Students in Granite School District will be provided the opportunity to hear this address. If you have questions or prefer your child not to participate, please contact the school principal.

I’m going down to the school in person tomorrow to speak with the principal. My children will not be participating in this event.

I’m so furious that I’m having a hard time putting this into words. The sheer unmitigated gall of this man has no bounds.

The letter points out that “this is the first time an American president has spoken directly to the nation’s school children”.  No kidding? That’s because every single other one was classy enough not to do anything this offensive. I would be offended if George Bush wanted to speak directly to my kids. In fact, I think if Bush had wanted to talk directly to our kids, the media would have had an apoplectic fit. Hell, I would have been ticked if Ronald Friggin’ Reagan had wanted to talk directly to my children.  I never thought we’d have a president who’d make me look back and wish fondly for the integrity of Bill Clinton.

It isn’t your damn job. It isn’t your job to teach my kids about anything. You have no business influencing my children in any way, shape, or form.

This is asinine, absolutely asinine.  Obama is a Marxist. I despise everything he’s done. I despise the people he’s surrounded himself with, communists, eugenicists, and quacks, lunatics and sycophants of lunatics. I hate what he’d done to America, and I know that I’m not alone. Approximately half the country hates him. He’s pushed more controversial legislation in a shorter period of time than any US politician ever.  He makes FDR look like John Adams, and right now he’s embroiled in the middle of the most impassioned and hated piece of legislation in the last fifty years, and in the midst of that, he somehow thinks it is a good idea to come speak to America’s kids?

Let’s see… Isn’t influencing the youth something straight out of the socialist playbook?  Oh, wait. I’m not supposed to call him a socialist, even though I’ve had a very simple challenge out to any of his supporters for the last month, and nobody has answered it yet. If Barack Obama is not a socialist, can you name five policies, regulations, or laws he’s pushed during his presidency that Karl Marx himself would not have approved of?  I’m still waiting on that one, and until anyone can answer it, he’s a Marxist.

Listen, you self-righteous sack of crap, we don’t like you. We don’t like what you’re doing. Red State America hates your guts. We hate your policies. We don’t want Cap & Trade. We don’t want Socialized Medicine. We don’t want to you telling us what to eat, how to live, or what to feel. We don’t like your friends. We don’t like your advisors or your legions of czars. We don’t want the government to build our cars, run our banks, or our health.  We don’t trust the government, and we especially don’t trust you.

Stay away from my kids.

  1. When an opponent declares, “I will not come over to your side,” I calmly say, “Your child belongs to us already… What are you? You will pass on. Your descendants, however, now stand in the new camp. In a short time they will know nothing else but this new community.”
    –Adolf Hitler

Scary, stealing from that sort of playbook….

  2. I’m afraid of what his “Reichstag Fire” is going to be.

They ARE varying the playbook a little, it’s Purple Shirts, not Brownshirts this time. . . .

  3. September 8 happens to be my first day of school… I actually *kind of* hope we’re invited to see this monstrosity so I can boycott it.

  4. The “Flagging” of “misunderstood” comments on “health care.?
The legislation to give him (oh, sorry, HIM) power to shut down the internet?
The new info on the white House survaillence of social networking sites?
This stuff is all for one reason- to ID friends -and enemys. I have often thought facebook , myspace etc are perfect venues to roll up a network of opponents- get them, get all thier friends too. A data base of 300 million is nothing these days.
I think he is in the process of trying to establish a file on every single American. Likes, dislikes, dirt, political affiliations, everything. What a tool for power!
    I hope I am wrong.

  5. Mine are all grown and gone but I would have done the same thing you’re doing. I suppose all the news org. were saying some good words about it today. Fox being the only one I watch, even they were saying that all the other presidents, Bush, Clinton, Bush went and talked to the children. I wish someone would go listen and tape it for the rest of us. Some schools are not going to allow it to be shown.

  6. Not participating won’t cause them any trouble.

Demand the right to sit next to your children, and help them interpret this speech. Make it a learning experience in the evils of hitlerian propaganda and youth proselytizing. Get other parents to show up to do the same.

Instead of indoctrination, they should get a classroom full of angry parents making sure their children know this is crap.

Bring digital cameras and record videos. If the district tries to keep you out, record that as well.

Make the district very sorry they even considered this.

  7. You have no idea how happy I am that I don’t have children. The idea of trying to raise kids in this day and age of felonious stupidity makes me break out in a cold sweat.

I really sympathize with you parents out there. You are playing in a rigged game that’s damned near impossible to win.

  8. As far as Im concerned we don’t need Obama telling our children to stay in school.
If Obama wants to preach that message he ought to be doing it in black schools where kids get pregnant at 13 and where 50% of them are too lazy to finish school anyway.

We do just fine, instilling in our children a sense of responsibility and a work ethic.
We don’t rely on the government for handouts.
Our kids don’t get preferential treatment
There are no quotas for our kids.

Obama should save his “stay in school speeches” for his own people.
They’re the ones who really need to hear that message

  9. Not that I disagree with you Larry (I’ve got to call my daughter’s school today to see if they’re going ahead with this monstrosity or not), but I kind of remember watching one president speak about staying healthy and one telling me to not shoot up tar heroin. Recorded, to be sure, but I think others have directly addressed school kids before.

And a speech about “Stay in school” doesn’t ruffle my feathers. Hell, he could talk about the joys of community organizing for all I care, most kids tune that shit right out. It’s the ‘lesson plan’ that pisses me right the hell off.

  10. 1. I completely concur with you.
    2. For the people who don’t see the problem – Why won’t they release the exact text of the speech? That would be the quickest way to calm the fears of most parents. Parents aren’t worried about him telling their kids to work hard and stay in school. Parents are worried about what else he will say in the speech. I know many parents that won’t let their kids watch or read anything without them going over it first. Why should a political speech be any different?

  11. My suggestion to my friends who have school-age kids was to have them go up to the school, Tuesday morning, and withdraw them for home schooling. Then spend the day teaching them about American values (a trip to the range would be appropriate), then go back Wednesday and re-enroll them.

Make the schools have to pay for two sets of paperwork, and if it’s the first day of school it will probably cost them a bit of funding, that’s based on enrollment.

  12. That question is going up on my facebook…

And I’m with you. I’m 24 and don’t have any youngins’, but if I did I’d be going ballistic over this. Not that I’m not already. The ISD next to mine is running and supporting the speech, handing out the documents from the Department of Reeducation and getting full on behind the lesson plan. I’m trying to figure out how to run for their school board.

  13. Actually both Reagan and GHW Bush both address school children; but then did not use it as a propaganda opportunity. Our school district is making it optional.

  14. Agreed with everything above!!!

This is an outrage. I am JUUUST about out of school, and I’m homeschooled so it don’t affect me, but I sorta wish I was in a town school… So I could make a big show of boycotting it.

Maybe the message wouldn’t be so bad, but it’s what ulterior motives I’m worried about….

  15. This was a simple equation for me, and it was the same as yours. However, I had a surprising variable pop up. Last night was Parent’s night and a chance to speak directly to my daughter’s teacher and principal. I was traveling but my wife asked the teacher directly what the intention was for this event since we had not received any information from the school.

The response, “We are not discussing the event, and are not participating in it”. Given the fact that this is in an outlying suburb of Chicago I continue to be pleasantly shocked by the attitude of the district.

Oh, and “…One nation, under god…” is still the official daily practice. As much as I have come to dislike the politics of this state, I am very grateful for the school district’s approach to traditional values.

  16. Funny. I wouldn’t worry – he probably just wants to tell your kids to pull the plug on your grandma. Or relate stories to them about his childhood in the darkest jungles of Kenya. Or teach them to sing “I vote Bolshevik!”

I would take them out of school for the day & show them pictures from the Flintstones Textbook of Natural Creation History.

  17. I’m a senior in High School, and I know that my school will be showing this, but I don’t know if it will be school-wide, or if each individual teacher will decide whether or not to show it in their class. My dad is considering keeping me out of school for that day.

  18. I have done as much research as possible on this since it all seems to be so tight lipped about the content, but they are now stating that they will release the full content of the speach in a word format a few hours before the speech. I have already contacted my kids school and they said that I am more than welcome to join my kids in the classroom during the speech if I want to. I will wait to make up my mind after I read the content. If it’s just a pep talk about staying in school fine (although I will still sit in with them even if it is just a pep talk), otherwise……

Also my kids school will not be having the discussions or activities that are being pushed in relation to the address.

  19. Home schooling, man, Larry, gotta tell ya. The budget is hard but boy-howdy, the crap we avoid is just monumental.

Thus, a stay-in-school speech, well, to a home school family, that’s really funny.

  20. http://www.Whitehouse.gov/MediaResources/PreparedSchoolRemarks

Not the best speech I’ve ever read, but not exactly a Marxist rallying cry either. Or maybe I’m just not reading it with a properly hysterical eye. I suppose a message of “work hard and stay in school” could mean the same thing as “be a lazy Communist.” At least, if you’re determined to claim that everything Obama does is part of an insidious plot to overthrow the Constitution (ironically, this tends to come from people who voted for Bush twice despite his support of things like the PATRIOT Act and the thankfully defunct TIPS program).

But then, when has the talk-show right wing ever let facts get in the way of outrage?

    1. Hmm… All in all, that doesn’t seem too bad, but he used the line “Because when you give up on yourself, you give up on your country.” twice, and that does have a certain socialist ring to it, don’t you think?

    2. Thanks for the link.

This is a terrible speech in terms of the egocentric, and ranks right up there with “talking down” to kids. A big big no-no, and it’s 2,436 words.

It does, as a separate commenter alluded to, smack of a hasty re-write.

  21. Nick: You think Obama would swear under oath that the new improved speech he released is the same one he was going to give before the fuss? I’d love to see it.

He still manages to say “I” 56 times vs. “nation” or “country” a total of 10 times in the text just released. Nice to see that his priorities haven’t changed.

  22. I remember Reagan talking to us in school, but I don’t remember about what. As others have mentioned, Bush (the elder) also spoke to the children, but that was after my time. I can’t say that I am all worked up about this, but I see it as a waste of time that could be used for something productive.

My child’s school isn’t showing the speech, so the point is moot for me anyway.

  23. Pitt: In a different context, the discussion of doing something “for the good of the country” could be socialist. For example, if it were prefaced by “stay true to Dear Lenin’s cause.” But I’d venture to say that staying in school is, in fact, for the good of the country. An educated populace is a benefit to the nation and a goal to strive toward for that and other reasons; that’s true regardless of your politics. Also, you’ll notice he discussed the potential for kids to invent the next iPod or Facebook or Google–touting innovations that resulted in their creators becoming extremely wealthy is hardly a Marxist pursuit.

Thomas: So, if Obama doesn’t release the speech beforehand, it’s because he’s going to try to make your children gay Communist Nazis, and if he does, he must have changed it from the original so that his traitorous plot wouldn’t be discovered. I don’t really understand the blind, insistent hatred of all things Obama. I didn’t like Bush as a president in the slightest, but I didn’t assume that photo ops in schools were part of his plan to turn America into a fascist state, and if he gave a speech that didn’t piss me off, my immediate reaction was not to assume that he’d changed the speech from his original advocacy of an American KGB. I get that you don’t agree with Obama. That’s fair; there’s plenty of reasons to dislike Obama as a president (some more valid than others). But why does every single thing he does, no matter how inconsequential, have to be part of some scheme to set the Constitution aflame? Hell, he could probably repeal the NFA and you’d claim it was just to give us a false sense of security so we won’t be ready when he comes to take our guns. Does the thought of admitting that his speech, while a bit rambling and in my opinion not particularly good, does not in fact advocate Communism actually cause you physical pain?

    1. Nick: I’d be more willing to believe that the speech released was what was originally intended if Dept. of Education hadn’t already withdrawn part of the associated materials in their study guide for the speech – y’know, the part where it asks “what can I do to help the president?” The gov’t is already on record amending what will actually get to the students. And Obama has shown that he is pathologically incapable of giving a speech without some high level of self-aggrandizement. He just plain can’t help it. Even the current text says “I” 5 times more often than he mentions country or nation. I’m not saying that his original text would automatically have been some total propaganda brainwashing effort. But I’d bet there was a lot more “how can the kids help Obama” stuff – like the study guide – than what made it into the hands of the parents.

I don’t believe that Obama is evil, or that he wants to see America destroyed just for giggles, but I do believe that he is astonishingly self absorbed and narcissistic. Nice try setting up a straw man argument to paint me as a kook, but I don’t have to see the big O as deeply evil and always up to no good to see him as so blinkered and self centered that he doesn’t even notice when he does something venal in order to pursue his eternal goal of advancing himself.

  24. Nick, as a rule of thumb, there are certain groups of people I don’t let my kids talk to.

    1. Sex offenders.
    2. Anyone who’s religion involves ritual sacrifice to Cthulu.
    3. Marxists.

I’m pretty sure Obama falls in #3. I’m still waiting for anyone to prove me wrong on that.

If #1 or #2 came to school and gave a ra-ra speech about staying in school, and it was all puppy dogs and rainbows without a single bad thing in the whole talk, I’d still keep my kids home from school for those too.

I don’t like them and don’t want them around my kids. Period. Especially the Marxists.

  25. Anthony: I don’t think it smacks of a hasty rewrite; to me, it sounds like he’s trying to be “hip” and “connect with the kids” and just failing miserably. I’d agree that it’s definitely not one of his better speeches (though often, good orators make it harder to notice when the speech they’re making isn’t that great, so it’s much more apparent when written out rather than spoken), but I think the good speechwriter calling in sick is a more likely explanation than fear that his dastardly brainwashing plot would be discovered.

Larry: It seems to me that a better solution than simply barring “Marxists” or anyone else from speaking would be to explain to your children what the president believes and why you disagree. That way, kids learn to base their opinions on reason and on personal moral or religious belief, rather than simply hating Marxists because they’re Marxists without actually knowing what a Marxist is. They’d also learn to think critically about what the president says and not assume that everything he’s saying is true just because he’s president (or, alternatively, that not everything he says is false just because he’s a Marxist–for instance, it’s still a good idea for them to stay in school, even if you despise Obama).

Also, why the hatred for Cthulu? Given the current crop of Republican candidates, I’d say he’s looking like a frontrunner for 2012.

    1. Good idea Nick.

Parents should attend these classes with their kids. Tea Party right there in class.

All the better to help ‘splain this Marxist asshole to them.
