Update

I just checked Amazon and they’ve only got 4 copies of MHI left in stock. I think that’s pretty cool in that I got my trade paperback from a major publisher to sell out, but I’ve still got no idea how many copies they ordered to begin with.

Autographed copies will start going out this Saturday. I’ve got about 20 here, and 35 more on the way, should be here early next week. I’m starting to run low on patches too, but should have enough to get through this.

If you haven’t checked out the Hold The Pig Steady songwriting contest, you really should. Once again, I’m blown away by the talent. You guys rock.

On that note, we’re still taking entries on the patch contest until the end of the month. We’ve got some awesome entries there.

I’ll be going to the ITRC in Wyoming next week. If you’ve not heard of it, it is a team shooting match. One person on carbine (me) shooting from 0-500 yards, one person on precision rifle shooting from 500-1000 yards (Atomic Ferret).  This was a last minute thing thrown together because SWAT magazine needs one of their authors to go. I’m out of shape, out of practice (more shoot! less write!) , and if we don’t come in last, I’ll be a happy man. That said there is one stage shot from a fast moving helicopter… Yes. I get to shoot a rifle stage from a helicopter. How friggin’ cool is that?

MHI:2 is being edited now.  I think I’m getting closer on it. #1 seems to be doing well, so I’m pretty sure #2 will sell.  Then I’ll do another edit pass at TGC:HM and I’ll start submitting it.

  1. Yes. I get to shoot a rifle stage from a helicopter. How friggin’ cool is that?

I believe the appropriate response here is PRETTY FRIGGIN’ COOL!

    😀

  2. Larry, remember when you shoot from a moving helicopter to shoot behind the target. Sounds weird until you think about it.

      1. Well, think about it. Your bullets, going perpendicular from the helo, have the same forward velocity (initially) as you do. If you point right a the target, that forward momentum will carry them forward of it by the time they reach it (or it might).

Aiming behind the target when you’re moving fast is the opposite of leading a moving target when you’re stationary.

  3. It took my two trips and 4 days to get the closest Barnes and Noble to pull your book out of the box and stock it.

I’ll check back Thursday or Friday and see if any are still there:)

Is it the same kind of comp as the Military Channel’s “Top Sniper” show?

    1. I’m not sure. I’ve not seen Top Sniper. There are usually about 30 teams and I’ve been told that about half of them are usually military.

      1. It wasn’t a bad bit of “reality” TV.
One sniper, one spotter, lots of different competitions and lots of different teams.
They had a chopper stage that a SWAT team did well on cause they landed a burst from an M4 on the steel target, most everyone else had high magnification scopes and just couldn’t do it.

Lots of different levels/stages. Urban combat, pic the right face out of the crowd and shoot it, engage the right colored moving targets from amoung a large group of moving targets, a dedicated side arm stage, a stalking stage, defend the convoy.

The last one was ghillied snipers moving to a shooting position while activelly being searched for via binoculars by sniper instructors. The watching instructors had to direct other members onto the sniper teams to get them out. After time was up the teams where pulled out, then sent back one at a time to their exact location to make the shot, which kind of sucks cause the weather changed and what not.

        Pretty entertaining.

  4. I loaned my copy of MHI to a friend on Saturday morning, and we headed off to the beach. Most of the day was spent NOT reading, but she had it done by Sunday evening, even though Sunday was also busy.

I told her about the lyrics contest, and she asked me “So when’s number two coming out? There’s going to be a number two, right?”

Said friend is the Lead Internal Auditor for a local mental health facility… She saw a LOT of me in Owen, and ended up identifying with him herself. She’s picky about her reading, so I’d say you’ve got a good thing on your hands.

  5. I know you’ll sell at least 1 autographed copy and 1 regular copy to my wife and myself…..

good luck on the comp, too bad they’re not doing any shotgun so you could laugh at the FUD’s while using the S12

  6. Yes. I get to shoot a rifle stage from a helicopter. How friggin’ cool is that?

Pretty friggin’ cool indeed! I’ve always wanted to shoot from a helicopter.

  7. I went to B&N to pick up your novel after seeing it on Amazon. They didn’t have any copies on the shelf even though it said it should be in the new paperback section. Turns out they forgot to put it out. The woman at the circulation desk grabbed me a copy and put some more copies out for others. I’m about 250 pages in so far and loving it. Glad to see there will be a sequel too.

  8. Larry,

I just finished your book last night. It’s not fair for several reasons:

    1) What took someone like Stephen King a lifetime of writing to accomplish, you were able to achieve just by sitting down and doing it, drawing from your experience with guns and watching movies. I tip my hat to you.

    2) I can tell where you trimmed content in the editing process. When and how can I read the stuff you chopped out of MHI so the publisher would take it? I’m talking about the Special Extended/Director’s Cut Version.

    3) MHI 2 comes out WHEN?!?!?!??!? I’m dying for the sequel!

You did a very nice job. I find your work inspiring, and am looking forward to reading more of it. Thank you for the MHI universe!

    1. Evylrobot,

      1. Thanks. 🙂
      2. The only official version is the Baen version. You are right, and there was a longer version, but I actually do like this version the best. Don’t worry. The cool stuff that I had to cut will be back in other books. I don’t waste anything.
      3. I don’t have an official contract date yet. As soon as I know I’m going to spam it all over the internet.

  9. Loved MHI. The humour and gore was great. The hat tip to Lovecraft was great as well, not to mention the trailer trash elves. I look forward to MHI:2. And I will refrain from saying disparaging things about accountants from now on…

    Cheers

    Luke
