You guys are so awesome.

In the last few days I’ve posted about the seven free sample chapters of MHI on Baen’s webscriptions, and a bunch of you that have your own blogs took up the torch.

So I’m selling some books. As of right now on Amazon:

Amazon.com Sales Rank: #8,746 in Books (See Bestsellers in Books)

Popular in these categories: (What’s this?)

#66 in  Books > Science Fiction & Fantasy > Fantasy > Epic
#89 in  Books > Science Fiction & Fantasy > Fantasy > Contemporary

That’s not bad for a book that still has 2 months before release.  I don’t know how I ended up in Epic fantasy, as I thought that was Lord Of The Rings, knights in shining armor territory,  but it looks like Jim Butcher is leading in there, so that’s totally cool.

Edited to add, Brandon Sanderson’s wrapping up of Robert Jordan’s epic Wheel of Time is already #2, and it doesn’t come out for quite some time. I know Brandon. He’s a good guy, great author, and I can’t think of a better person to root for his epic success. Mark my words, Brandon is going to go down as one of the greatest fantasy authors of all time. In his own, non-WOT writing, he’s already come up with a bunch of very original worlds and magic systems. Brandon thinks up whole new worlds like most authors think up plot lines.

* Edited because the numbers got even better!

  1. Epic fantasy?

I’ve always described your book as “gun-centric paranormal urban fantasy.”

One day, I had someone ask me, “What type of genre is that?”

    And then I sad, “Larry’s.”

    Ha ha. It’s true!

  2. Hey Larry,

I don’t know what twisted process in your brain produced the Perpetual Unearthly Forces Fund a.k.a. PUFF. But I’ve just finished reading the sample chapters at Baen, and now I have “Puff the Magic Dragon” stuck in my head, and it Won’t. Get. Out.

And it’s your fault, you sick, demented jerk. :-)

P.S. Not that it’s going to stop me recommending MHI to a certain sci-fi-reading buddy of mine in the Army, of course.

  3. I also just finished the sample chapters. It was entertaining. I wanted to keep reading, so yeah, I’ll buy… BTW, I passed on word to a few other gun nuts at work.

  4. Just read the first 7 chapters, thanks to the info from LawDog. One of the most interesting books I’ve read in a long time. You cost me several hours of sleep. lol. I would love to buy the book and would love to also purchase a patch. Do you have a set? Also do you have a complete ebook version for sale through anyone?

  5. I’ve had Baen’s rerelease of MHI bookmarked for some time now. I’m definitely buying a copy.

As for Brandon Sanderson taking over and finishing up Robert Jordan’s epic Wheel of Time series, I’ve got a question. I thought the original series finale was to be called “A Memory of Light,” according to Jordan’s website, and was due out in 2010. Yet the next book in the cycle, with both Sanderson’s and Jordan’s names on it, is apparently called “The Gathering Storm” and according to Amazon is slated for release in November 2009.

So has Sanderson and Tor changed the name of the concluding WoT novel, or has Sanderson decided that there’s simply too much material there to conclude the series in just one book, and “A Memory of Light” is yet to come? (I myself thought Jordan left too many plot threads hanging to resolve the WoT saga in just one novel.)

  6. Wes S. – Brandon Sanderson has his own blog, and, amazingly – he answered that question. IIRC he’s projecting an 800,000 word book, to finish all the plot threads, in a reasonable manner. (This precludes the “stasis box explodes, destroying Perrin, Mat and 1/2 the other characters” plot device that would otherwise be necessary.)

Given Mr Jordon’s inability to write a trilogy of less than 10 books, I’m not surprised.

And Larry, please don’t take that as a writing model! :)
(ok, just the part about selling 11 books on the NYT Bestseller list.)

  7. Larry:

As promised. I am still tiny and new, but I have a friend who is a relatively big blogger in the outdoor/survival genre, and he generously sends his readers my way – I will make sure he sees these links too.

Good luck – cannot wait until July!!

    Jen
